Hi! My name is Maggie Foster McMillan, I’m a Brooklyn-based interior designer currently pursuing an MFA from The New York School of Interior Design.
My life hasn’t been a straight shot to interior design. Growing up in Georgia, I was always encouraged to develop my personal style and artistic practice, which has remained at the core of how I interact with the world within and around me. Over the years I have worked as a researcher, ceramicist, civil rights organizer, sommelier, and vintage procurer. My eclectic range of professional and academic pursuits, along with my passion for drawing, gives me a unique perspective in interior design, making my process more personal, comprehensive, and caring.
As an MFA candidate at the New York School of Interior Design, I am able to further develop my design practice, grounding my style in historical and theoretical knowledge, and expanding my process by developing technical and practical skillsets.
In my work, I aspire to design bespoke interiors that are beautiful, purposeful, and personal. Guided by a sense of rhythm and whimsy, my style is both imaginative and grounded in place and history. Following my 80/20 rule, I source and design with 80% vintage and 20% custom furnishings for my projects, creating unique spaces that bring my clients’ dreams to life.
The undercurrent of my design process is artistic exploration through sketching and painting. Through drawing, I am able to play with form and abstraction in a way that is fluid and flexible. Watercolor as a medium allows me to represent my ideas on paper exactly I see them in my mind’s eye. I believe that design is a way to connect with people, and by exploring design solutions by hand, I am more able to understand the desires of my clients and to express my designs in a more personal way.
